Perak accelerates its economic transformation with BYD plant at KLK TechPark, Tanjong Malim

22 Aug 2025,

IPOH, 22 August 2025 – In an important step for Perak’s economic transformation, global electric vehicle leader BYD Company Limited (BYD) will establish its first automotive assembling plant in Malaysia at KLK TechPark, Tanjong Malim, Perak. This development reinforces the state’s vision of positioning Tanjong Malim as a leading automotive centre in Malaysia and ongoing efforts to bring compelling investment opportunities within Perak.

Leveraging the Muallim Speed-Lane (M-SL): Fast-Track Construction Project introduced in 2023 as an initiative to make the Muallim district a significant player in the international automotive sector, this investment from BYD was secured within a record of three months. Spearheaded by YAB Dato’ Seri Saarani bin Mohamad, Menteri Besar of Perak and YB Loh Sze Yee, Perak State Executive Council Member of Tourism, Industry, Investment and Corridor Development, the State facilitated discussions, streamlined processes and coordinated stakeholders effectively.

BYD’s presence in Perak is expected to be a catalyst for Malaysia’s electric vehicle sector. The new assembling plant will not only create employment opportunities but also support technology transfer, enhance expertise in EV manufacturing and encourage the growth of supporting industries. These spillover effects will enable local companies to participate in the global EV supply chain, further advancing Malaysia’s position in the regional automotive landscape.

In support of this vision, KLK TechPark, a 1,500-acre integrated industrial hub by KLK LAND provides the infrastructure and ecosystem needed to attract high-value investments such as BYD and to accelerate the expansion of Perak’s manufacturing base. KLK TechPark is envisioned as a hub for advanced manufacturing and green technology.

As the anchor tenant of the development’s first phase, BYD will take up 150 acres, with subsequent phases designed to attract vendors and businesses that can contribute to a complete and competitive automotive ecosystem.

Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Lee Oi Hian, Executive Chairman of Kuala Lumpur Kepong Berhad said, “KLK TechPark is a long-term development made possible through close collaboration with the Perak State Government. We are grateful for the support of YAB Dato’ Seri Saarani bin Mohamad and YB Loh Sze Yee, who were key in bringing all parties together. KLK’s roots are in Perak, where we first built our foundation and we remain committed to create positive impact in a sustainable way for future generations. We look forward to work with the State Government in supporting Perak’s move towards high-value industrialisation and contributing to the State’s socio-economic progress.”

In advancing Perak’s commitment to progress, these developments reflect the State’s strategies under the Perak Sejahtera 2030 Plan and the Perak Structural Plan 2040, which recognise the growth of industrial and manufacturing sectors as one of the key priorities in driving socio-economic development.
